Kathmandu: Vivek Dhakal has been arrested on charges of demanding a large sum of money in the name of a protest at The British College.
According to SP Pawan Bhattarai of the Kathmandu District Police Range, Dhakal was arrested under Section 253 of the National Penal Code, 2017, relating to the offence of criminal benefit (extortion). He is accused of bargaining for money while threatening to use political and administrative influence to shut down the college.
The college administration stated that Dhakal demanded Rs 3 million, threatening to have the college closed down if the money was not paid.
It is alleged that during meetings with the college’s management at a hotel in Naxal on Poush 16 and 17, 2082 (Nepali calendar), Dhakal created fear, intimidation, and pressure, warning of serious consequences if the demand was not met. He is also accused of spreading content through social media and a limited number of online news portals that negatively affected the college’s reputation, credibility, and image.
Similarly, Dhakal is accused of being involved in activities such as slogan chanting, vandalism, and damage to vehicles at the Trade Tower complex, where The British College is located, on Poush 8.
Dhakal is a former student of the British International College, which operates under affiliation with Keele University. It has also been reported that he failed to pay tuition fees owed to the college.
In the complaint filed by the victim side, threatening WhatsApp messages, audio recordings, links to news content, and other documents were submitted to the police as evidence. Based on these materials, Dhakal was arrested.
