Rasuwa: The Nepali Army and an Indian technical team have continued excavation and rescue operations under challenging conditions inside the tunnel of the Chilime Hydropower Project in Syabrubesi, Rasuwa, which was buried by floods.
Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, who visited Chilime and inspected the ongoing rescue and tunnel excavation efforts, said that the operation remains challenging but has not been halted.
According to Ambassador Srivastava, the Indian technical team working in coordination with the Nepali Army has already advanced approximately 100 metres inside the tunnel, using specialized equipment to explore the buried section.
“We visited our technical team stationed in the Syabrubesi area near Chilime. They continue their work excavating the Chilime Power House tunnel for rescue operations,” Ambassador Srivastava wrote on social media platform X.
He said the technical team is preparing to bring in additional heavy equipment to advance further inside the tunnel. The equipment will be used to accelerate excavation and search operations.
Conditions inside the tunnel remain extremely difficult. The ambassador said the presence of soft, sandy and muddy ground, swamp-like terrain and challenging geological conditions has made the excavation and rescue operation particularly difficult.
Despite these challenges, he said, both the Nepali and Indian technical teams continue their rescue efforts without interruption.
The power house area of the Chilime Hydropower Project was buried following floods and landslides, prompting the deployment of the Nepali Army and Indian technical personnel to search for and rescue people believed to be trapped inside the tunnel.
The rescue teams are using specialized technology and equipment while taking into account the risks posed by the unstable conditions inside the tunnel. The teams now plan to use heavy equipment to advance further into the tunnel and reach those trapped inside.
