Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif visited the Embassy of Nepal in Islamabad on Thursday and conveyed his condolences over the loss of lives in the devastating floods that have struck Nepal.
Sharif met Nepal’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Rita Dithal, and expressed solidarity with the government and people of Nepal as the country grapples with the aftermath of the disaster.
The Pakistani prime minister offered condolences to the families who lost loved ones and expressed his support for Nepal’s ongoing rescue, relief and recovery efforts. He also signed the condolence book at the Nepalese Embassy.
The visit came amid a growing international response to the disaster, which has caused deaths, disappearances and extensive damage to infrastructure and livelihoods in several parts of Nepal.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s personal visit to the Nepalese Embassy carries significance beyond a formal diplomatic condolence. It represents a direct expression of solidarity from Pakistan’s highest political leadership at a time when Nepal is confronting one of its most serious natural disasters in recent years.
The gesture has further highlighted the longstanding friendship between Nepal and Pakistan and Islamabad’s willingness to support Nepal’s humanitarian and recovery efforts.
Pakistan has been among the countries expressing solidarity with Nepal since the floods began.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had earlier spoken with Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of life and assuring Nepal of Pakistan’s support.
Islamabad has also moved to provide emergency relief assistance and supplies for flood-affected communities in Nepal, as the country continues rescue and humanitarian operations.
Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Sharif separately conveyed condolences following the disaster, praying for the victims and for the safe recovery of people who remain missing.
The Pakistani leadership has emphasized that Nepal will not stand alone in the difficult period and that Pakistan is prepared to extend humanitarian support according to Nepal’s needs.
