Kathmandu- On August 26, a major landslide disaster struck the border area between China and Nepal, causing heavy casualties and significant property damage.
The China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD) immediately activated its “8.26 Nepal Mudslide Rescue Operation.” Following extensive coordination by the Chinese Embassy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the General Administration of Customs, and the Civil Aviation Administration, and with free transport support from China Southern Airlines, the first batch of disaster relief supplies from China arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, on September 3. These supplies will be distributed in coordination with the needs of the Nepal government’s disaster response center to support the emergency resettlement and basic living guarantees for victims of the 8.26 Rasuwa mudslide and flood disaster.
Sudden Disaster, Severe Conditions in the Affected Areas
On August 26, a large-scale ice-rock collapse occurred in northern Nepal, triggering mudslides and flash floods. Torrents carrying vast amounts of sediment and boulders swept down river valleys, destroying villages, roads, bridges, and infrastructure along the way. The disaster affected areas near the China-Nepal border port, with Rasuwa District and Nuwakot District among the hardest hit.
Rapid Initial Response, Orderly Aid Progress
Immediately after the disaster, CFRD’s Nepal office activated its emergency response mechanism, conducting rapid disaster assessments and evaluations. Teams went to affected areas such as Nuwakot to assess the situation and, together with local partners, distributed urgently needed emergency supplies to affected residents. CFRD has now completed its assessment and evaluation of the disaster areas affected by the 8.26 mudslide and, in coordination and consultation with the Nepalese government, has begun supporting the Nepal government’s Nuwakot rescue center with the distribution of 14 tents, 500 food packages (including rice, oil, and beans), 500 family living kits, and 5,000 solar lamps.
First Batch of Supplies Arrives in Kathmandu on September 3
With the free transport policy and full support of China Southern Airlines, the first batch of CFRD’s aid supplies from China arrived in Kathmandu on September 3. These supplies, all donated by caring Chinese enterprises and individuals, mainly include 175 tents, 1,000 quilts, 1,000 cotton coats, 1,000 emergency humanitarian relief boxes, and 6,000 medical packing bags, totaling 27 tons and valued at over one million yuan. Upon arrival, the foundation will transport the supplies to the Rasuwa disaster area as directed by Nepal’s Disaster Relief Committee, to ensure basic food, clothing, housing, and transportation for affected residents, and to support local rescue and emergency response teams in the safe, proper, and dignified handling of victims’ remains.
Thanks are extended to the generous donors – High-Flyer Quant, Beijing Tongxinyuan, and Zhejiang Anjihui, who rushed to prepare materials and worked overtime to pack them the very next day after learning of the Nepal mudslide disaster. Sincere appreciation also goes to China Southern Airlines for its full support across domestic and international operations, ensuring that this batch of relief supplies could arrive in Nepal just nine days after the disaster, playing a vital role in rescue efforts and demonstrating the compassion of the Chinese people and their care for the affected communities in Nepal.

CFRD has been active in Nepal since the devastating 4.25 earthquake in 2015, conducting emergency rescue and post-disaster reconstruction efforts.
