Kathmandu : Zhang Maoming, the newly appointed 23rd Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Nepal, has officially assumed his role, vowing to strengthen the enduring friendship and comprehensive cooperation between China and Nepal.
In a statement released upon taking up his duties, Ambassador Zhang expressed deep honor and responsibility in his new position, entrusted by Chinese President Xi Jinping. He extended sincere gratitude to individuals from all sectors in Nepal who have long supported the growth of bilateral relations.
Highlighting the historical ties between the two nations, Zhang described China and Nepal as “friendly neighbors linked by mountains and rivers” and partners united by generations of mutual support and shared development. Over the 71 years since establishing diplomatic relations, the countries have stood together through challenges, consistently upholding each other’s core interests.
China has unwaveringly backed Nepal in safeguarding its national independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, while supporting its pursuit of a development path suited to its conditions and efforts to improve livelihoods. In return, Nepal has adhered to the one-China principle and firmly supported China on key issues.
A key milestone was President Xi Jinping’s historic 2019 state visit to Nepal, which elevated relations to a Strategic Partnership of Cooperation Featuring Everlasting Friendship for Development and Prosperity. Under the leaders’ guidance, political trust has deepened, high-quality Belt and Road Initiative cooperation has yielded results, and people-to-people exchanges have flourished, delivering real benefits to both peoples.
Ambassador Zhang noted that 2026 marks the start of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, during which the country will advance Chinese modernization and high-standard opening-up, creating new opportunities for Nepal and others. As Nepal navigates its own transformation, China is ready to collaborate on implementing the four Global Initiatives, bolstering Global South solidarity, and promoting an equal multipolar world and inclusive globalization to build a community with a shared future for mankind.
In his commitment as ambassador, Zhang pledged to implement the consensus between President Xi and Nepali leaders, work with all sectors in Nepal to carry forward traditional friendship, and expand exchanges across fields. The Chinese Embassy will practice people-centered diplomacy, serve Chinese nationals in Nepal, and protect their legitimate rights and interests.
“Let us work hand in hand to advance the Strategic Partnership of Cooperation Featuring Everlasting Friendship for Development and Prosperity between China and Nepal, and jointly build a China-Nepal community with a shared future,” Zhang concluded.
Ambassador Zhang Maoming, who previously served as a deputy director in the Department of Asian Affairs at China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, arrived in Kathmandu on Friday and is expected to present his credentials to President Ram Chandra Paudel soon. He succeeds former Ambassador Chen Song.
The appointment underscores China’s continued emphasis on deepening ties with Nepal amid evolving regional and global dynamics.
